Sunday Sayings February 18th: Part One 19-Feb-2006
Forres Mechanics - Home

We have gone for a slightly different running order this week with the typed interviews pre-empting the audios. We start with the reaction to arguably the two big results of the weekend.

Gregg Carrol:
It was not one of our most memorable games but the result certainly is one of the most important. We battled hard right to the end and got what I thought was a due reward as we had also had another couple of opportunities just before we got the goal.

We were poor in the first half and I put that down to not having the game last week but in the second half we upped the pace and it is marvellous that Steve got his 50th career goal for us.

We now have another six cup finals to play as we stake our claim for the championship but we just have to concentrate on our own game during this spell and if we get help from other clubs along the way it will be a bonus.

Les Fridge:
Once again we showed we can compete against a team who are challenging for the championship and it could have been so different if our chances that hit the woodwork in the first half had gone in.

Willie Barron was also denied by a great double save by their goalkeeper and then we were hit by a sucker punch on the break after Iain Brooks had headed a fine opening goal.

Give credit to Vale though as they showed why they are pushing for the title as they kept going to grab the vital goal. The lads are sitting in the dressing room gutted that they conceded the late goal as we at least deserved a point for what we put into the game.

Steve Paterson:
"It was probably the best game we have been involved in this season. It was end to end and both teams could probably argue that they could have won it. We were 2-1 up and had a one on one that Craig MacMillan missed and I felt we might pay for that.

"Huntly came back, equalised and quite rightly had a penalty claim that wasn't given so they could argue they could have won it, we can argue we could have won it but from the point of view of it being an advert for the Highland League it was a great game.

"The game was exciting, it drew you in and in the last twenty minutes everyone's legs were going and with the midfield wide open it was going from penalty box to penalty box. It was a fantastic game of football and both sets of players deserve credit for what they gave the fans today.

"Both teams gave it 100% and you could see both knew they had to win the game but in the end we cut each others throat so obviously we have to say that at the end of the day the draw was maybe a fair result but from our point of view we are going to miss a key player for a few games."

"It was the worst sending off I have seen in eighteen years of management and the referee has admitted himself it was a mistake and whether there is an appeal system in the Highland League or not I don't know but all the guy has done is taken the ball out of a hole and the ref has turned and misinterpreted it. That is all very well but it could end up in a four match ban and we miss a key player but it was a shame because the game itself, everything was good about it in terms of the football."

Billy Anderson:

"For the effort we put in, the result doesn't reflect the game. We had at least two stonewall penalties and one that could have gone the same as well. The sending off wasn't the important part of the game.

"We had 95% of the first half, rattled the post at the end of a great move, had loads of balls into the box and we go in at 1-0 down. It was a fighting performance. We played good football, the balls in from the wide players were good, we were aggressive and dominated the midfield. We really dominated the game.

"Near the end we were gun ho, 2-2 was no used to us so we had to do it and there was going to be opportunities. We went three at the back then two at the back and really went for it.

"I also thought young Lee MacGregor was outstanding and he is only a young kid and he has the making of a good Highland League player."
