Highland Youth League Play Off Preview 9-May-2007
Clachnacuddin - Home

Keith have taken the prestigious honours in winning the Scot Ads Highland League on top of the Morrison Motors Turriff Aberdeenshire Shield and going for the Fosters Highland League Cup this weekend, which would make it five if they are successful, having also clinched the Aberdeenshire League and the Under 19 Highland League Cup recently

However they missed out on the chance of adding the Youth League title to that list when they were ironically pipped by Inverurie Locos who won the Highland Youth Development League East Section and tomorrow night at Kynoch Park, will meet Clachnacuddin the North Section winners in what should be an exciting HFL Youth Championship play off game. Kick Off 8.00 pm.

Clach were unlucky to lose to Keith in that Youth Cup game recently, John Cheyne saving a penalty at a vital stage of the game for the Maroons who went on to win 2-0.

Chairman David Dowling was proud of the efforts of his youngsters when he spoke to Brian Barclay after the game

The Merkinch youngsters have lost only one game in their League campaign, going down 3-1 at Nairn County and have averaged five goals per game. In their most recent game they beat Alness Utd 2-1 with goals from Andrew Fraser and Chris Ross. Alness took the lead through Stewart Murray

Locos held their nerve in their final two games, beating Cove Rangers 2-0 at home and Buckie Thistle 4-1 away from home which helped them to pip Keith who finished second.

Coach Ian MacKinnon pays tribute to the efforts of the squad over the whole season:

The attitude of the boys has been fantastic, so focussed on what they had to do in the must win games. Cove had a stronger team on duty at Harlaw Park than in Aberdeen but our boys came out with the proper attitude and on the bigger park, knew the job they had to do.

We have learned a lot from our defeat in the SFA Youth Cup by Hearts at Tynecastle. Although we lost 3-0, it was goalless at the break, two quick goals and a killer third knocking us out but we had no qualms, they were full time players.

It has been a team effort, there are players who have appeared in the first team, such as Allen Padua and Bruce Cutler. Brucie is a Scottish schoolboy player but was suspended recently, David Christie came in for him and did so well he kept his place. That emphasises the team spirit in the ranks.

It will be very tough against Clach but we go into the game knowing we have been the winners in a very strong League so we will be well prepared
